A mother of four children from Utah taught her kids a trick they could use in case of an emergency. One day, unfortunately, her 8 and 10-year-old sons had to put her lesson into practice.
One morning Jodie woke up and felt a searing pain in her left ovary. Along with the two boys she immediately got into the car and rushed to the hospital. After she reached hospital, she called one of her a neighbor and requested him to take the children to school while doctors examined her. At the hospital both her sons sat on a bench outside and waited, while Jodie was being diagnosed with a ruptured ovarian cyst.
Jodie didn’t imagined that her neighbor will take 40 minutes to arrive. Later, on the same afternoon, when the boys came home from school, she found out what had actually happened during those 40 minutes.
When both her sons were waiting, they were approached by an identified woman and two men, who asked both the boys to follow them to the restroom and help them to convince whoever was in there to come out and see the doctor. The boys replied “No, thanks,” over and over again but still the three strangers insisted they follow them. “Please, you could save his life just by going to the restroom and talking to him,” they kept repeating. However, both of them, did not move until finally Jodie’s neighbor arrived. When they got inside the car, the two boys saw a man come out of the restroom, join the other three and drive off.
“When they told me what had happened, I was speechless. But the anger and the shock I felt turned into immense gratitude when I heard how my son CJ had used an old family trick to keep him and his brother safe. A trick to find out whether or not someone has bad intentions,” says Jodie. CJ explained to his mom, “I knew they were bad people because they were asking us for help. Adults don’t ask kids for help.”
Jodie taught her children a rule that an adult never asks a child for help. Even in her blog she posts advice to other parents on how to raise their children to be independent, safe and responsible with money.
