Losing your own child is painful and same goes for animals too. In an accident, this dog lost her puppies, and she thought the world had collapsed—but her owner had a plan to help her still enjoy motherhood.
Jessica Woodruff’s dog Daisy, in February, had given birth to seven puppies, and had grown attached to them like any mother would. The puppies lived in Woodruff’s barn on her property in Roseburg, Oregon, where Daisy had made a bed in the straw for them to be comfortable.
Daisy seemed to be looking forward to raising her offspring.
But, unfortunately, tragedy struck. In an accident, the barn caught fire and was completely destroyed, and Daisy lost all seven of her 3-week-old puppies.
“We tried to run to the barn but it was too late. We had to hold Daisy as she tried to run into [it],” Woodruff told Buzzfeed News.
This horrible loss sent Daisy into a rut.
“Daisy wasn’t really eating, was walking down to the barn whining and sitting down,” Woodruff said. “My heart broke for this new mom—that’s all she wanted.”
Daisy’s owner couldn’t stand to see her like this; Jessica is a mother herself, so she couldn’t even imagine that happening to herself. She wanted to help her as soon as she could, and she had the right idea to do it.
Woodruff enlisted the help of her sister, Jacque, to help find foster puppies for Daisy.
The owner posted a message to a local Facebook page to try to find some foster puppies for Daisy, hoping someone would see the post and help them. And that’s exactly what happened.
A radio and news station in Oregon saw the post and covered Woodruff and Barnett’s story, which gave their request enough exposure for a perfect match to be made.
Lorna Murphy’s dog had died shortly after giving birth, leaving 8 orphaned puppies.
Daisy was going to be a foster mom to eight babies!
As soon as the puppies arrived, Daisy accepted them immediately, and almost instantly became happy again.
“Daisy was in heaven!” Woodruff told Mashable. “It was so amazing to see the change. She had purpose again.” Treating them as if they were her own, she guarded them, along with feeding them and cleaning them.
Adopting the orphaned puppies worked out perfectly. Daisy longed to have puppies again, and the orphaned puppies were certainly looking for a mother to tend to them.
“It kind of made sense to go with the ones that were orphaned,” Jacque told Inside Edition.
Though this was only a temporary arrangement, Daisy couldn’t have been happier to take care of the puppies, and it brought her back to her old self.
Once the puppies were weaned they went back to their dad and owners. Daisy meanwhile had found the healing she needed through taking care of them.
“Without a doubt, these foster pups have helped her,” Woodruff said according to Mashable. “We have our Daisy dog back.”
