Dealing with plastic waste is one of the vital things that the world needs to address to protect our earth and people have been constantly doing that. About 165 million tons of plastic products polluted the ocean as of 2012 and the number would have obviously increased now.
However, local fishermen all over have started to clean the waters and take care of the sea which provides them their livelihood. In India, the fishermen have come up with a brilliant and useful idea that can be a game-changer.
According to Xavier Peter, a fisherman from India, it is time to return the favour to ‘Mother Sea’, who protected him and his family over the years.
After realizing that he was getting more plastic than fish, he and nearly 5000 other men decided not to throw the plastic back to sea. Instead they get the garbage back to land and use it in a meaningful way.
With the support from the government and a recycling center, the fishermen clean, sort, and process all the plastic products they get. They have collected nearly 65 metric tons of plastic waste.
They are then converted into confetti-like form before it is sold to construction companies who use it to build stronger roads. Apart from keeping the sea clean, the new idea has also created job opportunities to many.
In 2011, the EU also came up with a similar idea to address plastic and water pollution. The organization started a project that compensated fishermen who caught plastic instead of fish.
