Looks like drinking isn’t really that bad for health!
Francisco Nunez Olivera, Bbrn on December 13 in 1904, 113-year-old grew up in Bienvenida in Extremadura, western Spain – the village in which he still lives.
Receiving birthday cards and letters of congratulations from around the world, Francisco started his birthday as he always does, enjoying a slice of cake accompanied by a glass of milk.
He was sure to have some red wine later though since he credits this as being the secret to a long life.
Francisco enjoys a glass of red wine each day and eats vegetables he’s grown by himself on his own land.
He and his family believe this diet of booze and home-grown food is the reason why he’s had such a long and happy life.
Surrounded by his four children, nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, the widower celebrated his birthday at his home, surrounded by his loved ones.
A retired farmer, Francisco – who has two siblings aged 97 and 93 – fought in the Rif War during the 1920’s, between Spain and the Berber tribes in Morocco.
After the death of Israeli Yisrael Kristal on August 11, Francisco became the world’s oldest man and astonishingly, doesn’t have any aches, pains or illnesses.
He’s in good health with perfect blood pressure and until the age of 107, was going on daily walks in his village.
Francisco became known in his village as ‘Marchena’ due to his similarity to the famous Spanish flamenco singer, who performed in the town shortly after he arrived back from military service.
He’s one of 30 people who are over the age of 90 and lives in the village which has only 2,300 inhabitants.
Local Mayor Antonio Carmona told El Mundo:
He’s a living example of the quality of life in the municipality, but also of the pollution-free skies and countryside and stress-free work of the traditional way of life.
The place really does sound perfect!
Francisco himself spoke about turning 113 saying:
I know I’m old but I don’t feel old. I’m crazy, satisfied with my soul.
Opening letters from all across the world – which asked Francisco for a photo and his signature – he was overwhelmed by the admiration and love strangers were sharing.
His proud daughter, 82-year-old Maria Antonia, who is his full-time carer added:
Some days he talks all day and others he sleeps all day.
Someone mentioned the idea of taking him to a retirement home once and it made me feel bad.
Happy Birthday Francisco! May the birthdays continue for you!
