NASA Discover Earth-Like Aurora Crown In The Newly Discovered Planet

NASA has been trying to find an alternative source for living and the agency have made several break-throughs over the years, and one among them id the rouge planet, which is about 20 light years away from Earth.

The first of its kind, this free-floating astronomical object was initially believed to be a failed star, however, recent studies claim it is indeed a planet and not a star. It is found to be 12 times bigger than Jupiter and features an aurora crown and a magnetic field 200 times more than that of Jupiter.

Dr. Melodie Kao, an astronomer at Arizona State University said, “It is giving us some surprises that can potentially help us understand magnetic processes on both stars and planets.”

The reports said that the planet does not have solar winds. It has a strong magnetic field, which is causing the planet’s strong ‘glow’ like the Earth’s aurora borealis. It is also this radio signature of the auroras that resulted in the discovery of the planet.

“We think these mechanisms can work not only in brown dwarfs,” she said. “But also in both gas giant and terrestrial planets,” she added.

The study also reveals that the auroral radio emissions can lead to discovery of more planets beyond the solar system.

This can be handy in checking out more exoplanets or rogue planets that are not attached to stars.

“This particular object is exciting because studying its magnetic dynamo mechanisms can give us new insights on how the same type of mechanisms can operate in extrasolar planets,” said Dr Kao.
