The United Airlines received a lot of flak from public for the way they handled the passenger and many of them had the passenger’s back. However, the police report has a slightly different take on the matter.
According to the report “minimal but necessary force” was used when Dao lashed out after refusing to leave the flight. Officer Mauricio Rodriguez states in the incident report that Dao became combative when two officers tried to persuade him to leave the plane, saying, “I’m not leaving this flight that I paid money for. I don’t care if I get arrested.”
Rodriguez then said that officer James Long tried to get Dao out of his seat, at which point he “started swinging his arms up and down fast and violently.” Long then lost control of Dao who then fell and landed mouth-first on the armrest.
However, Dao’s lawyer, Thomas Demetrio dismissed the report and said that it was “utter nonsense. Consider the source.”
Meanwhile, the three officers remain on leave as the investigation continues.
