The 32-year-old plumber from Colorado was spending the weekend at Windsor Lake with his family. But what began as a peaceful vacation quickly took a shocking turn.
While wading through waist-deep water, Angelo felt something strange brush against his leg. He kicked his leg back to bring up the odd substance, and that’s when he saw the bottom of a child’s foot float to the surface. It was a 3-year-old girl named Sitali, whose body was cold and lifeless.
He immediately pulled her out of the water and screamed for help, asking whose baby she was. Sitali remained unconscious, her skin already blue. Angelo then worked tirelessly with two off-duty nurses to administer CPR.
He later visited Sitali where she was recovering at Children’s Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. It was a tearful reunion, and her family is eternally grateful for the man who saved her life. “I’m coming to let her know that I love her, and she’s a part of my family now,” he said.
As the world hails Angelo a hero, the humble man attributes his deed to simply being in the right place at the right time. “As I told the little girl’s mom, when I saw the baby’s toes, that became my baby.”
Sitali is expected to make a full recovery. As it turns out, she was not wearing a life vest when she began to drown. Angelo plans to collect life vests and flotation devices for families who can’t afford them.
